Definition:
Urinary tract infection (UTI) is a bacterial infection of the bladder and any part of the urinary system-kidneys, ureters, and urethra. Women are at greater risk of developing a UTI more than men. UTI is the most common bacterial infection.
UTI are a severe public health problem and are caused by a range of pathogens, but most commonly by Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus mirabilis, Enterococcus faecalis and Staphylococcus saprophyticus.
