Definition:
Kidney stones also known as nephrolithiasis or renal calculi, are mineral deposits in the renal calyces and pelvis that are found free or attached to the renal papillae. They contain crystalline and organic components and are formed when the urine is supersaturated, calculi typically form in the kidney and ideally leave the body via the urethra, without pain whereas larger calculi/stones are painful and may need surgical intervention. The renal calculi are composed of calcium stones (calcium oxalates, calcium phosphate) which is the most common renal stones, uric acid, struvite (magnesium ammonium phosphate) and cystine stones.
Kidney stones disease is a crystal concretion formed usually within the kidneys. It is an increasing urological disorder of human health, affecting about 12% of world population. It has been associated with an increased risk of end-stage renal failure.
