Definition:

A fracture is a discontinuity in a bone or cartilage resulting from mechanical force that    exceeds the bone’s ability to withstand them. Fractures can occur in a variety of methods: a normal bone subjected to acute overwhelming force, usually in setting of trauma, weakened bone from a focal lesion (eg: metastasis or bone cyst), weakened bone due to metabolic abnormalities (eg: osteoporosis) genetic abnormalities (eg: osteogenesis), chronic application of abnormal stress (eg: running) resulting in microfracture.
