Definition:
Dysmenorrhea is the medical term for menstrual cramps or painful menstruation. It is of two types: primary dysmenorrhea and secondary dysmenorrhea:
Primary dysmenorrhea: common menstrual cramps usually begin one to two years after menarche, pain is usually not related to a specific problem with the uterus or other pelvic organs. Increased activity of the hormone prostaglandin is thought to play a role in this condition, and the pain usually become less painful as a woman ages, and may stop entirely if the woman has a baby.
Secondary dysmenorrhea: Menstrual pain that develops later in women who have normal periods and is often related to problems in the uterus or other pelvic organs, such as Endometriosis, Fibroids, Pelvic inflammatory disease, Premenstrual syndrome (PMS), Sexually transmitted diseases, Stress and anxiety, cervical stenosis.
