Definition:

A fatty liver is the result of the accumulation of excess fat in liver cells. Fatty tissue slowly builds up in the liver when a person’s diet exceeds the amount of fat his or her body can handle. There are two main types: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) & Alcoholic fatty liver diseases, aka alcoholic steatohepatitis.

Fatty liver or Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) corresponds to the presence of macro vesicular changes without inflammation (steatosis) and lobular inflammation in the absence of significant alcohol use.  NAFLD is commonly associated with metabolic syndrome, obesity, diabetes and hyperlipidemia. Nearly 80% of patients with metabolic syndrome have NAFLD .
