Definition:

A skin abscess is a buildup of pus in or on the skin. It is a part of the skin that has an abnormal growth or appearance compared to the skin around it. There are two categories of skin lesions: primary and secondary. Skin abscesses are common and affect people of all ages. They occur when an infection causes pus to collect in the skin. Skin abscesses may occur after developing:
A bacterial infection (often staphylococcus)
A minor wound or injury
Boils
Folliculitis (infection in a hair follicle)
A skin abscess may occur anywhere on the body.
Primary skin lesions are skin conditions present at birth or acquired over a person’s lifetime.
Secondary skin lesions develop from irritated or manipulated primary skin lesions.
