The inauguration of a Holistic Wellness Centre alongside the launch of the Meghalaya Traditional Knowledge Portal unveiled not just infrastructural milestones but a visionary leap towards integrating traditional healing practices into the mainstream on 22 February 2024 in Shillong, Meghalaya.The event was launched by Dr. M. Ampareen Lyngdoh, illuminated the collective endeavor of the Bio-Resource Development Centre, The Energy and Resources Institute, New Delhi, and the Meghalaya Basin Development Agency. The highlight was the unveiling of a draft book titled 'Meghalaya Traditional Knowledge: Supporting Document for Course Curriculum in Schools', a pioneering effort to weave the rich tapestry of indigenous knowledge into the fabric of educational curricula.
Local customs, languages to be part of school curriculum

The state government has set its sight on incorporation of regional customs, languages, and cultures into the state curriculum framework and will hold talks with various stakeholders in February 2024 to pave the way forward. Education Minister Mr Rakkam A. Sangma announced on 30 January 2024. He said that the department will meet with the leaders of the three district councils and even writers’ societies to talk about incorporating local content such as music, local customs, and the Sixth Schedule into the curriculum for the students. Mr Sangma emphasised the need for a uniform curriculum, pointing out that the Education department is aware that various schools use textbooks published by different publishers.
Amazon tribes in Brazil fight wildfires with indigenous knowledge

The Indigenous people living alongside the Brazilian portion of the Amazon have managed their fire-prone landscapes for millennia using controlled burns. More than 700 Indigenous firefighters now work for Brazil’s National Center for Wildfire Prevention and Suppression (Prevfogo). They are starting to use smart maps and apps to share their knowledge of the forest to protect it from destructive wildfires.
Climate Recipes: Art project in Goa gathers traditional knowledge for climate adaptation

What did indigenous people and cultures know about climate change? Did they have strategies and knowledge for climate adaptation that could be useful in dealing with the climate crisis today-perhaps in conjunction with, or even more than, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML)? Perhaps they had something intimate or tactile, or some age-old wisdom that is captured in the stories and practices of or respective cultures? 'Climate Recipes' presented by Sunaparanta Goa Centre for the Arts, Pollinator.io, and Socratus, and curated by Mr Srinivas Mangipudi and Mr Srinivas Aditya Modipevi, asked questions. The wisdom gathered was then compiled in a 130-odd-page book that has insights on how to tackle the issue of climate change looking back at indigenous knowledge. The book contains the life experience, and knowledge of 25 people who come from different backgrounds, right from academicians to farmers, poets, architects and environmentalists.
North Eastern Handicrafts and Handlooms Development Corporation to establish Ashtlaxmi Haat & Experience Centre in Guwahati, Assam

The North Eastern Handicrafts & Handlooms Development Corporation Limited (NEHHDC) establishing Ashtlaxmi Haat & Experience Centre at Guwahati with a project cost of ₹ 7.6 crore. The Haat will have 24 permanent stalls, which will provide a market access to artisans of all Northeast states & will have an artisan residency to provide accommodation to artisans from out station. The NEHHDC is setting up an ERI silk spinning plant at Integrated Textile Park, Mushalpur, Baksa (Assam) with a Project cost ₹14.92 crore. It is envisioned to provide direct employment to 375 individuals and provide indirect livelihood to Approx. 25,003 households. The plant once commissioned will have a production capacity of 450 Kgs of ERI Silk Yarn per day.
Snake bites to bone setting traditional doctors to get a quality stamp

The government plans to certify individuals who may not have the prescribed qualifications to be healthcare practictioners but bear knowledge gained from previous generations for certain treatments, such as for snake bites, jaundice, and bone-setting.

The Ministry of Tribal Affairs, through two of its agencies namely Tribal Co-operative Marketing Development Federation of India (TRIFED) and National Scheduled Tribes Finance & Development Corporation (NSTFDC), has contributed significantly in promoting economic activities being undertaken by the tribal communities and have impacted in turn their economic development. Under the component of ‘Van Dhan’ of Pradhan Mantri Janjatiya Vikas Mission (PMJVM) scheme, TRIFED has sanctioned 3958 Van Dhan Vikas Kendras associating 11.83 lakh beneficiaries since its inception in 2019-20. These VDVKs have made a business of around Rs. 41 crores through value addition of Minor Forest Produces (MFPs) and non-MFPs so far (as on 06.12.2023).

Under the Govt of India, Skill India Mission aims at Skilling, Re-skilling and Up-skilling to ensure all young Indians are prepared for the large number of opportunities coming up as the economy expands and India moves from the 10th largest economy to 3rd largest economy in the world. SIM is aimed at giving access to all youth in India to get future ready, Industry ready skill. Under the SIM, the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) provides skill, re-skill and up-skill training to youth across the country including Uttar Pradesh through a comprehensive network of skill development centres/institutes under various schemes viz. Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY), Jan Sikhshan Sansthan (JSS), National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS) and Craftsman Training Scheme (CTS) through Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs). Initiatives to Support Cultural Industries

Government fully recognizes the importance of our culture and cultural industries as sources of socio-economic development, livelihood generation and wealth creation as well as the wellbeing of individuals. With this in view and to promote, protect & preserve various forms of folk art & culture, the Government of India has set up seven Zonal Cultural Centres (ZCCs) in the country with headquarters at Patiala (Punjab), Nagpur (Maharashtra), Udaipur (Rajasthan), Prayagraj (Uttar Pradesh), Kolkata (West Bengal), Dimapur (Nagaland) and Thanjavur (Tamil Nadu). Annual grant-in-aid is provided to these ZCCs to organize cultural programmes/activities in their member States on a regular basis throughout the year. Artists from all over India are engaged by these ZCCs who showcase their talents during these programmes to give them opportunity to earn their livelihood. For well-being of the artists, they are paid honorarium, DA/TA, boarding & lodging and local transportation.
Global initiative to conserve 30% of the planet guided by Indigenous knowledge launches at COP28

Countries across the world are being encouraged to join a groundbreaking new conservation initiative, which brings together governments, Indigenous peoples, and local communities, to help achieve the global goal of preserving 30% of the planet’s land and water by 2030. Launched in December 1 2023 at COP28 in Dubai by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), International Indigenous Forum on Biodiversity (IIFB) and technology company Esri, Act30 brings together a wide network of scientific experts and Indigenous peoples’ representatives to help governments chart an effective and fair route to conserving their countries' biodiverse areas.The initiative is designed to support the 190 governments that have committed to the 30x30 target of conserving 30% of terrestrial, inland water, coastal and marine areas by 2030, under the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, agreed in December 2022.
