Traditional Medicinal Uses and Pharmacological Properties of Rhus Chinensis Mill.: A Systematic Review
Publication Year: 2018
Author(s): Devi HM, Singh NI
Abstract:
Rhus chinensis has long been used in traditional medicine and cuisine in Northeast India, particularly for treating gastrointestinal and urinary disorders. This review highlights its traditional uses, nutritional value, pharmacological properties, and potential health applications. A literature search using Google Scholar, PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Springer identified 37 relevant studies from 112 retrieved articles. Research mainly focused on the plant’s galls and leaves, though variations in plant parts used made comparisons difficult. Findings suggest that R. chinensis possesses antiviral, antibacterial, antidiarrhoeal, antioxidant, antidiabetic, and anticholesterol properties. It may help suppress HIV-1 and herpes simplex virus activity, reduce blood glucose and cholesterol levels, control diarrhoea, and protect against DNA damage. Further scientific studies are needed to validate its traditional medicinal uses and therapeutic potential.
