Abstract:

Jaintia tribal community, the original inhabitants of Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya have a fascinating culture and tradition based on a close relationship with the nature. Plants and plant products play an important role in Jaintia life and thus are an integral part of Jaintia culture. An effort has been made to shed light on the knowledge of Jaintia people about various plant species that grow in the region and the way these plant species are used as edible plants, indicators of agricultural seasons and in the treatment of some common ailments. Jaintia people have been conserving the biodiversity of the region for ages by maintaining the sacred groves.
