A Training Manual for Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities on the Convention on Biological Diversity - Module 1
Publication Year: 2020
Author(s): The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity
Abstract:
The Convention is the first time in international law that the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity is referred to as “a common concern of humankind”. The Convention is also regarded as an international instrument essential for sustainable development. The agreement covers the conservation and sustainable use of all ecosystems, species, and genetic resources. It links conservation efforts to the economic goal of using biological resources sustainably. The Convention Biological Diversity reminds decision-makers that natural resources are not infinite and sets out a philosophy of sustainable use. While past conservation efforts were only aimed at protecting species and habitats, the Convention Biological Diversity recognizes that ecosystems, species and genes must be jointly conserved and if they are to benefit all humans
