NOAA Guidance and Best Practices for Engaging and Including Indigenous Knowledge in Decision-Making
Publication Year: 2024
Abstract:
This guidance is premised upon three foundational principles applicable to the use of Indigenous Knowledge by decision makers: 1) Cause No Harm; 2) Free, Prior and Informed Consent; and 3) Knowledge Sovereignty.
These principles are intended to guide the motivation, character, and intent of collaborative initiatives undertaken by NOAA and Indigenous Knowledge holders. These principles
recognize that each Indigenous community has its own customs, practices and requirements that may guide Indigenous Knowledge interactions with outside entities and may restrict how different facets of Indigenous Knowledge are shared and used by tribal and non-tribal entities.
