Everyday Musical Life among the Indigenous Bunun, Taiwan
Publication Year: 2023
Author(s): Stock JPJ, Chiener C
Abstract:
The book enhances transdisciplinary research on music in everyday human existence by beyond the commonly studied urbanized Western people. The book examines the current musical activities and influences in Buklavu, a village in southern Taiwan primarily populated by the indigenous Bunun people. It focuses on various forms of music, including imported music like TV theme songs, karaoke singing, and church hymns. Additionally, it explores how Bunun traditions have changed due to educational and community initiatives, as well as folkloric festivals. The case study supports a new, broadly applicable theoretical model for studying music in everyday life in global society. This model is historically informed, attentive to individual and group differences, aware of the interaction between ordinary and extraordinary aspects, and ready to facilitate practical research.
