Indigenous Knowledge Systems and Drought Preparedness in Rural Umzingwane in Zimbabwe

Abstract:
The article examines existing indigenous knowledge and the influence they have on the preparedness of vulnerable groups against drought shocks. Further, the study focuses on the perceptions of rural Umzingwane on the application of indigenous knowledge in predicting and responding to drought shocks in contemporary settings. In this context, the Drought Cycle Management Model anchored theoretical arguments on IKS and drought preparedness. The study gathered data using in-depth interviews purposively targeting spirit mediums, traditional leaders, Agriculture Technical and Extension Workers, District Development Coordinator to gain insights on IKS and its relevance in drought preparedness.
