History Of The Technique A knowledge holder from Ri-Bhoi region has been practicing poultry farming for the last three years in her own farm, currently she has 14 local hens. Five hens are sitting on their eggs (all day) until they hatch.
Manufacturing technique Local poultry farming has no standardized operational management practices and therefore, management practice has been largely based on traditional practices and knowledge. However, as most of the inputs are local, hence area specific management practices had been observed starting from housing, feeding, brooding to marketing of eggs, meat and grown chickens.
Method of Preparation The hatching area is made with wood. There are times she uses a bamboo basket for the hens to lay their eggs. Usually, a rice straw or husk is kept at the base of the basket as it makes the area tender and more suitable for the hen to lay and hatch their eggs. As soon as the eggs are hatched, the chicks are immediately taken from the hatching basket to prevent them from getting crushed by the mother hen who is still hatching the others. The newly hatched chick is then put in a room with relatively sufficient heat. The room where the chickens are kept is covered with rice husk as it provides warmness to the chickens and easy to clean and maintain the shed. During the day, the chickens are allowed to roam freely in the open while at night they are kept inside for safety.
Material Composition The chickens are fed with grains and occasionally, corn is also served as a feed, whereas, the baby chicks are fed with broiler feed.
How to implement According to the knowledge holder, a hen can lay up to 15 eggs before brooding. The duration of brooding period is 21 to 22 days. Larger eggs typically weigh 45–50 gm, whereas smaller eggs weigh 25–30 gm.
