History Of The Technique | A Traditional Knowledge Holder (TKH) from Garo Hills has been practicing poultry rearing and the knowledge of rearing was established from the ancestors. It is was found that several other poultry farmers practiced the same methods of rearing. |
Manufacturing technique | There were no standardized management practices as most of the poultry farmers in Garo hills reared hens in an open condition. |
Method of Preparation | Approximately, 13-18 eggs were laid by a single hen with an average weight 25-50 gm depending upon the size of the hen and possessed light and brown in color. The brooding period of local chicken ranged from 3 weeks during summer to 2 months during winter. |
Material Composition | The hens are fed with grains and corn twice or thrice a day. |
How to implement | Local Chicken, commonly called \\\"lokalDo.o\\\" in Garo land. The average body weight of each local rooster is 2-3 kg and cost Rs1000- 1500 per kg whereas, body weight of each hen is 1-2kg and cost Rs 500-1000 per kg. |
New R & D leads | Some of the diseases commonly found in poultry farm are fowl pox, Infectious bronchitis, Pullorum, and twisted neck etc. About 50-60% in Garo hills followed traditional methods of treating diseases such as turmeric mixed with grains and fed to the chicken |
