Sixth Annual Conference on Native American Nutrition: Resurgence of Indigenous Foodways

This is the only conference series in the world devoted to the food and nutrition of Indigenous Peoples. The Sixth Annual Conference on Native American Nutrition will bring together tribal and community leaders, nutrition and wellness educators, researchers and students, health practitioners, government officials, funders, and others to discuss the current state of both Indigenous and academic scientific knowledge about Native food systems, food sovereignty, nutrition, and health, and will identify new areas of work. The most cutting edge information will be presented, and networking, community building, and the formation of new collaborations among the attendees will be encouraged and facilitated.
Mainstreaming Indigenous and Local Knowledge System into Adaptation Communication for the Hindu Kush Himalaya Region

Indigenous, traditional, and local knowledge (ITLK) systems are diverse forms of knowledge prevalent across the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) region. ITLK systems are often integrated into livelihood strategies and coping strategies for climate change impacts. With the support of the Asia-Pacific Network for Global Change Research (APN), Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES), and partners including ICIMOD-HUC, HNV Garwal University, AMARC-AP, Ministry of Climate Change – Pakistan, Bhutan Himalayan Research Initiatives (BHRI)-Bhutan, Royal University of Bhutan, and Keio University, the CAPaBLE project “Development of adaptation communication framework mainstreaming indigenous and local knowledge for Hindu-Kush Himalayan Region” was developed. As a result, various investigations, capacity building, and new initiatives have been started, including a new HUC thematic working group on ILK and LLA. This workshop provides an ideal opportunity to share and showcase the findings of this initiative and discuss steps for follow-up.
International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples 2023

On 23 December 1994, the United Nations General Assembly decided, in its resolution 49/214, that the International Day of the World’s Indigenous People shall be observed on 9 August every year. The date marks the first meeting, in 1982, of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations.
The International Day observance will take place online on Wednesday, 9 August 2023.
This year’s theme is: Indigenous Youth as Agents of Change for Self-determination.

Panchmahal district is one of the tribal districts in Gujarat .There are 7 talukas in Panchmahal in which the largest taluka is Godhra. Being home to such huge tribal population tribal day is celebrated every year in the district. The World Tribal Day is observed on 9th August each year to raise awareness and protect the rights of the worlds indigenous population .Recounting the contributions made by the tribal community in the Indian culture and traditions a rally is organised in the Godhra in Panchmahal district The tribals dress turn up in big numbers in the rally in traditional dress and pagadhi on their heads.

The 2021 commemoration of the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples focussed on the theme “Leaving no one behind: Indigenous peoples and the call for a new social contract” which was held on 9 August 2021.
The 2021 commemoration of the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples featured an interactive discussion with two speakers on  the distincted  elements to be considered when  building and  redesigning a new social contract that is inclusive of indigenous peoples – where indigenous peoples’ own forms of governance and ways of life must be respected and based on their free, prior and informed consent and genuine and inclusive participation and partnership.
Launch Of State Of The World’s Indigenous Peoples, Volume V On “Rights To Lands, Territories And Resources”

The first publication of The State of the World’s Indigenous Peoples was published in 2009 and its major focus was on: Poverty and Well-being; Culture; Environment; Contemporary Education;Health; Human Rights and Emerging Issues. The report was well received and according to press reports, the publication revealed alarming statistics on indigenous peoples’ poverty, health, education, employment, human rights, the environment and more. This was the first United Nations publication and provided much needed information on the status of indigenous peoples throughout the world.The Report on the State of the World’s Indigenous Peoples promotes awareness of indigenous peoples’ issues within the United Nations system, with States, academia and the broader public.
ILO and Partners Celebrate International Day of World’s Indigenous Peoples 2019

One of the major findings from this project was indigenous languages. The indigenous communities identified that 92 percent of languages are vulnerable; 4 percent of languages are critically endangered, and the remaining 4 percent already extinct in Bangladesh. Only five indigenous communities get bilingual education at primary level and there are no indigenous teachers to teach in the schools. UN Resident Coordinator, Mia Seppo, emphasized the need to preserve indigenous languages and to enhance access to education for their own language.
